Frequently Asked Questions
On Cavaliers.....
How
Big do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels get?
AKC
Standards are between 12-18lbs up to 13" at the Shoulder.
Adult weights
are determined by many factors. Some Cavaliers stay slim
and some Fill out as they get older.
Although Classified as a Toy Breed, Cavaliers are not Toy like in
personality or size.
Their
personalities & Dispositions compare more with a Golden
Retriever
and Their Size & Weight even when only 12lbs, outwieghs most
other
Toy Breeds. Like a Big Dog in a small package.
Although Playful, they are calm and not nervous & Yappy as some
toy breeds tend to be.
What
Color and Markings do they have?

Cavaliers
come in four lovely colors:

Blenhiem
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - Tan & White

Tri-color
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - Black & White with
Tan markings

Ruby Cavalier
King Charles Spaniel - Tan/Rust color

Black
& Tan Cavalier King Charles - Black with Tan markings
What
is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's Life Expectancy & Health?
You will find the averages at 9-11 Years but many live into their teens.
Many factors Influence their Health. As with other Pure Breeds, Genetic
Problems can exist.
Mitral Valve Disease?
MVD is the genetic disease that is of most concern.
It is important that the Parents and any know lineage, be clear of
this and any other serious problems. MVD shows up as a murmur in the
Mitral Valve in the heart.
Although, serious in a young Cavalier Puppy,
it is often the official cause of death in an older Cavalier. They may
develope a murmur detectable at middle age which rarely effect quality
of life for many years.
Keeping your Cavalier at or close to their desirable weight, will
benefit their health and longevity as it does in Humans.
We have not had MVD in our lines & Pray we
never do.
Their General
Health is Excellent
Cavaliers have less genetic problems than most
other Pure Breds.
Are
They Good With Children?
Lilly
watching TV with my Nephews.
Cavaliers
are wonderful with children. Their gentle, sweet natures, make them the
perfect companions to the old and young alike.
Cavaliers are also
wonderful for the disabled. They seem to know what each
person
needs from them and are as happy with an active social life as they are
with a very sedantary life. As long as there is a warm lap to
cuddle in, they are satisfied.
How
are Cavaliers with other Pets?
Adding
a new puppy to a family that already has a pet or two, can cause
moments of concern and some questions. You of course don't want to
disrupt the harmony in your home with your other pets.
Cavalier
Spaniels are such a mellow breed, not to say they don't enjoy a fun and
active life. They also prefer harmony and get along very well
with all types of other pets.
We
have families who have shown the greatest concern when adding a puppy
to a home with one or more cats. We don't personally have
cats
so when our puppies leave here, they have had no experience with cats.
Recently our nine month old Tri-colored boy,Tex, left for his new home
which included two cats.
His
new Mom and Dad were not sure how their kitties would take to the new
addition to the family. Here is Tex on the couch using one of
the
cats as a pillow.. this picture was taken only two days after arriving
in his new home.
So rest assured that your new addition to the
family will bond quickly with your other pets. With cats in
particular, the cat will set the tone of the new relationship and the
puppy will do his or her part to win them over.
Do
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Need a Big Yard?

A
cavalier does love to run and play, but they are just as happy to make
the livingroom their playground.
They do very well in situations,
such as apartments, where they must be walked to do their duty.
Grooming
a Cavalier?
Bathing, Brushing and Nail Clipping are about all there is to meeting
your Cavalier's Grooming needs.
Do
Cavaliers Shed?

Cavaliers
are moderate shedders. Regular bathing and brushing minimizes the
shedding.
If you choose to have them trimmed, grooming is made very
easy and they look real cute too!
Here is our sweet gal, Hazel, with her
new haircut... she loves the bow!
Cavalier
Ear Care?
Ear
Care is important. Cavaliers have what is called, closed
ears.
If they are left moist, yeast infections may develope.
A
good drying after baths and swimming will keep them clean, dry
& healthy.
Choosing
Boy Or Girl?
If
you have a Personal Preference, go with that. If you don't.... If it is
even possible, The Boys are Sweeter Than the Girls. It's such a fine
line, only you would know it! All Cavaliers love to cuddle
and
will seek out any available lap or follow you around the house or
anywhere you go!
Must
You Spay or Nueter?
Many breeders will insist on this by contract.
Here at Wagging Tails Ranch, We Leave it up to you to make those
Important Decisions.
The
only thing You Must Do...... Is Love Your New Baby with all Your
Heart.
We
give Full AKC Registration with our puppies. In some cases if
male puppies stay with us past 6 months, we will have already had them
neutered.
How
easy are Cavalier King Charles Puppies to train?
Very Very
Easy!
Cowboy is
training his Son Noah to Beg!

Cavaliers
have the Magic Combination!
High Intelligence & Desire to Please
You.
Cavaliers Enjoy anything as long as they are doing it with you.
Obedience
Training
With Cavaliers....it is fun for
them as long as it is fun for you. PetsMart has a wonderful Puppy Class
as a
starter. You can find out more about the classes they offer as well as
Training Tips.
What
Do I need For a New Puppy?
Just
A
few essentials, Leash & Collar, Name Tag, Soft Bed (Theirs or
Yours), Feeding Dishes & Of Course, Some Dog Toys &
Treats.
Which Puppy
Potty Training Method?
Just like with kids, everyone has an opinion on which method works best.

I do my best to give them an early start.
Early Potty training 4-6 weeks, with paper.
After they have received their 1st Puppy shot at 6-7 Weeks, they are
able to start learning the doggy door.
Mom
is very helpful at this stage as they just follow her out and once they
discover the Great Outdoors (their little piece of it) they go In
&
Out All Day, weather permitting.
Doggy Doors?
Although
they learn to use with a doggy door Here.....If you don't have one,
Don't want one or Can't have one...Not to Worry. They will quickly learn
their New Routines at your home.
Trouble with Potty
training?
Every Puppy is an individual & if Potty Training takes longer
than you hoped, It may be time to switch to Plan B.
It may be better for your Puppy to be confined to an area where
accidents are
less destructive than to Free Roam and cause you Anger &
Stress, such as your kitchen or laundry room.
Hint: Puppy will need to potty upon every awakening and after every
meal.
What
do Cavalier King Charles Love to Eat?
Warning.....
Anything they can find!

Be very aware of plants that may be harmful to your Cavalier.
I prefer to feed our Cavaliers a Lamb and Rice Formula food, which is
easy to digest and has less possiblity of food allergies.
What
Kind of Treats Do Cavalier Spaniels Like?
They like them all, but too many and it will interfere with their food
intake.
During
Training of any kind, treats may be offered throughout the
lesson.
Fresh Carrots and Canned or Frozen Green Beans are two of their
favorite
things to eat & the best part is you can have some too!
Raw
Meaty Bones?
Maybe
you have heard that dogs should not chew & eat raw bones..
Cooked bones are a
hazzard for them, but raw bones are a healthy, helpful treat.
Chewing
on the Raw bones is very good exercise for dogs and Puppies to keep
their teeth strong and
clean.
My Cavaliers love, Beef and Pork ribs the best. Above is Laura Belle
and Puppies, eating Raw Chicken Necks.
For
more information on feeding your puppy or dogs a raw meaty bone diet,
there are many sites that are very informative on the BARF Diet. Gross
sounding name but the dogs just LOVE IT!
