Frequently Asked Questions
On Cavaliers.....

How Big do they get?

AKC Standards are between 12-18lbs up to 13" at the Shoulder. Adult weights are determined by many factors. Some Cavaliers stay slim and some Fill out around 2-3 years old. Although Classified as a Toy Breed, Cavaliers are not Toy like in personality or size. Their personalities & Dispositions compare more with a Golden Retriever and Their Size & Weight even when only 15lbs, outwieghs most other Toy Breeds.

What is their Life Expectancy & Health?
You will find the averages at 9-11 Years but many live into their teens.

Many factors Influence their Health. As with other Pure Breeds, Genetic Problems can exist.

MVD(Mitral Valve Disease) seems to cause People the most concern. I can tell you what I have read and you can read what others have to say, but the best advice I can give you is this:

Call your Local AKC Or CKCS Club and get a referal to a Vet they Recommend, Who know of what he Speaks.

We Have not had to deal with it ourselves & Pray we never do.

Their General Health is Excellent & Their Grooming needs are minimal.

Proper Ear Care is most important.
Ears need to be dried well after baths or swimming, as they have (closed Ears) and if left moist it is a breeding ground for Yeast and other infections.
We have had a few ear infections, but not many considering our Gang.

Bathing, Brushing and Nail Clipping are about all there is to meeting your Cavalier's Grooming needs.

Boy Or Girl?

If you have a Personal Preference,go with that. If you don't.... If it is even possible, The Boys are Sweeter Than the Girls. It's such a fine line though, only you would know it!

Must You Spay or Neuter?

The only thing You Must Do...... Is Love Your new Baby with all Your Heart.

Here at Wagging Tails Ranch,We Leave it up to you to make those Important Decisions.

How easy are they to train?
Very Very Easy!
They have the Magic Combination, High Intelligence & A Desire to Please You.
Cavaliers Enjoy anything as long as they are doing it with you, Obedience Training Included.
PetsMart has a wonderful Puppy Class as a starter. You can find out more about the classes they offer as well as Training Tips.
What Do I need For a New Puppy?
A few essentials, like Leash & Collar,Name Tag, Soft Bed (Theirs or Yours),Feeding Dishes & Of Course, Some Dog Toys & Treats.

Which Potty Training Method?
Just like with kids, everyone has an opinion
I do my best to give them an early start.
Early Potty training 4-6 weeks, with paper.

After they have received their 1st Puppy shot at 6-7 Weeks, they are able to start using the doggy door.

Mom is very helpful at this stage as they just follow her out and once they discover the Great Outdoors (their little piece of it) they go In & Out All Day.

Although they become pro's with a doggy door Here.....If you don't have one, Don't want one or Can't have one...Not to Worry.
They will quickly learn their New Routines.

Every Puppy is an individual & if Potty Training takes longer than you hoped, It may be time to switch to Plan B.
It is better for your Puppy to be confined to an area where accidents are less destructive than to Free Roam and cause you Anger & Stress.
Hint: Puppy will need to potty upon every awakening and after every meal.

What do they Eat?
Warning.....
Anything they can find!

What Kind of Treats Do They Like?

They like them all, but too many and it will interfere with their food intake.
During Training of any kind, treats may need to be offered throughout the lesson.
Fresh Carrots and Canned Green Beans are two of their favorite things to eat & the best part is you can have some too!
